Verizon and the iPhone: First Impressions

Early on Tuesday the 10th, I received my very own Verizon iPhone. FedEx diligently brought it right to my door, where my wife collected it and in turn, promptly called to give me the good news. I took off for home and collected my new phone. Getting it up and activated, was of coarse a breeze. Just plug it into your iTunes and wait a moment. Within moments of activating it, my text messages started flowing in. That familiar SMS app sure is a nice treat, after using a LG EvoTouch for the last year.

I found the Verizon network speeds to be at the least, on par with ATT's speeds for this area. They actually seem to be a little faster. Yes it is true that a CDMA network such as Verizon uses, will not allow Data and Voice to be in use at the same time.. But I do not see that hindering me at all in the future. Personally, I always have at least my iPad with me. However,  you can be on a WiFi network and surf the web on your iPhone, while talking on it. Which should work for most people, as almost everywhere has WiFi these days. Even my local grocery store offers free WiFi!

The antenna issue that some people have been reporting with the Verizon iPhones seems to be a non issue for me. My home is built into the side of a hill, so half my house is basically underground. My LG EvoTouch would regularly drop connections in that part of the house on Verizon's network. My iPhone does not. The only way I have been able to make the Verizon iPhone to drop signal strength, ahs been to basically cover every square centimeter of the metal on the phone with my hands. If this is an issue for John Q. Public, might I suggest your holding it wrong? :)

All in all I have to say I am VERY pleased with the phone and the service. My bill actually went down $10 a month versus my plan on the Evo. My only complaint is that I did not even receive my email notice with the tracking info, until the day AFTER I got my iPhone. With that said, I believe that the iPhone and Verizon will be a beautiful pairing.
