App Review: Google Translate Saves the Day!

If you are like me, you speak only one language well. You may be able to muddle through a couple others, but English is the only fluent language you have. Well, in today's modern world of interconnected communities, English alone is just not enough! In my town, we have a very large Spanish speaking community. I even have several Spanish speaking clients. Which often times makes communication a little difficult for my clients and I.

Enter Google Translate.
The newest app out from our good friends at Google! I have played with various other translation devices and software over the years, but this is hands down, the BEST translator I have ever used!

Out of the box, it will translate back and forth between I think, 57 languages. It will give a spoken translation of 21 of those languages. I spent a day trying this out with my Spanish speaking clients. With only minor errors, likely having to do with our accents, it worked better than expected. In my favorite example, I had it translate " my hovercraft is full of eels" from English to Spanish. One client responded.. "It seems to translate correctly, but I do not know what a Hovercraft is in either language." so I explained that a hovercraft was kind of a boar that floats on air. Her eyes lit up and she responded with, then it was exactly right!!

Later that same day I tried it out with one of my clients who is Polish. Again, the app did exactly as expected, even better than expected actually! I was having a hard time explaining a situation with their server to her, so I pulled out the app. I stated the issue in as plain a manner as I could and let it translate it. When the app spoke it aloud to her, she knew exactly what I was talking about.

The best part of all, this app is FREE!! That is right! Like most great things to come from Google, this too costs zero cents! If you are planning to travel, have any acquaintances who speak a different language than you, or just want to know how something would sound, when spoken in simplified Chinese.. you NEED to get this app!!
