Buying the iPad 2? What to do with your iPad 1?

So you bought the new iPad 2, but now you are not sure what to do with your Original iPad? Well, there happens to be a GREAT Cause that can use your old iPads. The HollyRod foundation is accepting donations of iPads, to give out to Families in need, with Autistic children. This is a wonderful program, with the ability to affect so many lives in a positive manner. I do not generally promote charities, but this one touches close to home for me and I feel it is a very worthy cause.

A Quick quote from the HollyRod "iPads for Communication" page,

"1 in 110 children are diagnosed with Autism, 50% of those children have extreme difficulty learning to speak, 25% of them never will. While these individuals may not be able to speak, they have much to say. Traditional Alternative Communication Devices on average cost around $8000. With the introduction of Apple’s iPad along with specially designed communication “apps”, the ability to speak is far more accessible for so many ranging in total cost of about $1000. Yet there are thousands more who still cannot afford to give their child a voice.
On November 16th, 2010 the HollyRod Foundation embarked on a holiday giving campaign like no other. From  November 16th through December 31st, 2010, HollyRod committed 100% of all donations to go directly towards the purchase of iPads and communication/learning apps to give a voice to those without."

I have spoken with The Executive Director for HollyRod and she has informed me that they have nearly 5000 children on the waiting list for iPads. They have had to temporarily close the application submissions, until they fill the current back log. So if you find yourself wondering what you should do with your old iPad, This would be a GREAT place to send it to. They of coarse also take monetary donations. For more info, please go to HollyRod iPads for Communication.

  2. I hope that you and your child are able to acquire one! Now that the value of the original model has dropped, hopefully more people will be able to contribute. Even a few dollars here and there can go a long way to help with this cause.
